Why do we celebrate Teacher's Day on 5th September?

In India, teacher's day is celebrated on 5th September as a tribute to the contribution made by teachers for the society.
5th September is the birth anniversary of the famous and great teacher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He believed in the power of education and believed that education could solve all the problems of the society.
When his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, he said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if 5th September is celebrated as Teacher's Day. 



What is the contribution of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan for India?

Dr. Radhakrishnan was born in a middle class family in a small town of Tirutani.
His father didn't want him to learn english and to be educated in english. He wanted him to become a priest. But he couldn't contain him for long and sent him to the school in Tirupati and Vellor.
He was just 21 year of age when he started his teaching profession as a teacher of Philosophy at Madras Presidency College. He became the professor of Philosophy at the age of 29 at University of Calcutta.
He was invited to the Philosophy professor chairs in England in 1920.
He has the most prestigious chair of Philosophy in the country- The King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science
Such a record in teaching didn't go unrecognized and soon he was elected the Vice President of India in 1952.
After all his achievements and his hard for country he became the President of India in 1962. As the president he did his best at the worst stage our country is going through. He didn't draw his full salary and donate his full salary to Prime Minister National relief fund.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (5 September 1888 - 17 April 1975) was one of the very successful Teacher, Vice President, President and most respectful person of the country.
